On this very day 20 years ago, we last released a new version of DasBlinkenLights. It recently came to our attention that the original DBL Mac app had not, in fact, disappeared from all archives!
Now you might think it doesn’t make any difference at all that this silly software from nearly 35 years ago is uselessly on someone else’s server in addition to ours. However true, it also recently came to our attention that another site, Infinite Mac, makes it amazingly easy to emulate old Macs right in your browser. Here’s a link to take you back to 1991:
The Macintosh Garden tab on the bottom allows quick access to apps that aren’t already on the mounted Infinite HD. May we suggest a search for “blinken” to get your downloading started? Once you put the software on your personal Saved HD, it will also be available for any other machines and OS versions you may want to play with.2
Infinite Mac also has NeXTStep/OPENSTEP emulators, which was our first stop on the path that lead us back to Mac OS X after we got heavily into Linux development. We haven’t tested if any of our old software for that platform works well, but do let us know if you start playing around and discover an itch you’d like us to scratch. We might even enjoy revisiting Project Builder/Interface Builder if you need us to recompile something “new”!
